Former President Donald Trump suggested that the Civil War could have been avoided through negotiation, arguing that Abraham Lincoln should have done more to prevent bloodshed.
Trump’s comments come before the Iowa caucuses, where he has a significant lead in the polls.
The Civil War has become a topic in the GOP primary, with former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley also addressing the issue. (Trending: Epstein’s Brother Finally Breaks His Silence)
Trump said, “So many mistakes were made. See, there was something I think could have been negotiated, to be honest with you.”
“I think you could have negotiated that. All the people died. So many people died,” he continued.
“It was, I don’t know, it was just different,” said Trump about the Civil War.
“I just find it – I’m so attracted to seeing it,” he explained.
“There’s nothing nice about it,” added Trump.
He also suggested that Lincoln would not have the same historical cachet “if he negotiated it.”
Trump’s remarks were criticized by GOP former Rep. Liz Cheney, who questioned how Republicans can defend his comments.
