U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin has been hospitalized since the start of 2024 due to complications from an elective medical procedure.
Although he resumed his duties on Friday and is recovering well, the exact reason for his hospitalization has not been disclosed.
Austin was placed in the ICU due to “severe pain,” and Pentagon officials have cited privacy and hospital space considerations for not providing further details. (Trending: U.S. State Passes Personal Pronoun Ban)
Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, said, “Since resuming his duties on Friday evening, the Secretary has received operational updates and has provided necessary guidance to his team.”
“He has full access to required communications capabilities and continues to monitor DoD’s day-to-day operations worldwide,” he continued.
It remains uncertain when he will be released from the hospital, and it’s unclear if he will conduct in-person press briefings in the coming week.
