The head of the Vatican’s doctrinal office has defended the decision to allow the blessing of gay couples, emphasizing that it does not change traditional Church teaching on homosexuality.
The declaration has caused opposition from bishops and criticism from theologians, with some viewing it as a doctrinal leap.

Cardinal Fernández said, “The real novelty of this Declaration“is not the possibility of blessing couples in irregular situations. It is the invitation to distinguish between two different forms of blessings: ‘liturgical or ritualized’ and ‘spontaneous or pastoral.’”
German Cardinal Gerhard Müller wrote the church “cannot change their meaning in such a way as to trivialize sin, especially in an ideologically charged cultural situation that also misleads the faithful.”
“Notice that not only sinful persons are blessed here, but that by blessing the couple, it is the sinful relationship itself that is blessed,” wrote Müller.
“Therefore, if this blessing were given, its only effect would be to confuse the people who receive it or who attend it,” he warned.
“They would think that God has blessed what He cannot bless,” he explained.
Cardinal Fernández responded, “There is no room to distance ourselves doctrinally from this Declaration or to consider it heretical, contrary to the Tradition of the Church or blasphemous.”
