In 2023, The Walt Disney Company lost its top spot at the global box office to Universal, with Disney experiencing a string of box office flops, including The Marvels, Wish, and the latest Indiana Jones sequel.
Universal’s success was driven by The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer, generating $4.91 billion in worldwide ticket sales compared to Disney’s $4.83 billion from 17 titles.
Disney also faced challenges with CEO Bob Iger and layoffs, while its streaming services continued to lose money, leading to a significant price increase for Disney+.
The studio’s box office failures, attributed in part to perceived “woke messaging,” have impacted its reputation.
