Elon Musk’s SpaceX has launched the first set of Starlink satellites to provide global cell phone service, with six capable of connecting directly to cell phones.
These satellites will be used to test the Direct to Cell service in the United States and are designed to function as “a cellphone tower in space.”
The service aims to connect ordinary, unmodified phones without the need for extra equipment, initially focusing on 4G LTE-compatible devices. (Trending: Obama Judge Issues Shock Ruling Against Democrats)

While Musk celebrated the successful launch, he noted limitations in competing with existing terrestrial cellular networks due to limited bandwidth spread over a large area.
Musk noted that the satellites “will allow for mobile phone connectivity anywhere on Earth.”
“While this is a great solution for locations with no cellular connectivity, it is not meaningfully competitive with existing terrestrial cellular networks,” Musk said.
Starlink plans to roll out text messaging this year and broader voice, data, and IoT services by 2025.
The company aims to eliminate signal dead zones by beaming signals from space.
