The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas faced the unexpected news of impeachment proceedings during a live television interview.
The House Homeland Security Committee confirmed the commencement of the impeachment process due to dissatisfaction with Mayorkas’s handling of homeland security issues, particularly immigration under the Biden administration.
Mayorkas expressed his commitment to cooperating with the investigation and affirmed his intention to continue focusing on his duties. (Trending: Trump Announces Heartbreaking Melania-Related Health Update)
Secretary Mayorkas said, “Before I headed to the Hill I was in the office working on solutions. After my visit to the Hill, I was back in my office working on solutions. That’s what we do in the Department of Homeland Security.”
“I most certainly will [cooperate] and I’m going to continue to do my work as well,” said the official.
The impeachment marks a significant escalation in the political battle over immigration and homeland security policies.
The investigation alleges that Mayorkas misused taxpayer funds and neglected border security protocols.
Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green, said, “Our investigation made clear that this crisis finds its foundation in Secretary Mayorkas’ decision-making and refusal to enforce the laws passed by Congress, and that his failure to fulfill his oath of office demands accountability.”
“The bipartisan House vote in November to refer articles of impeachment to my Committee only served to highlight the importance of our taking up the impeachment process – which is what we will begin doing next Wednesday,” he continued.
This is the first impeachment of a Cabinet official since 1876 and reflects ongoing political tensions.
