A developing storm is expected to become the inaugural nor’easter of 2024, bringing significant snow and flooding rain to the East Coast and South, leading to messy weekend travel.
The storm will produce heavy rainfall, wind, and snow in at least 20 states, with potential for heavy snowfall in higher elevations.
The forecast anticipates heavy snow and gusty winds in various northeastern areas, with snowfall heaviest in higher elevations and communities west of Interstate 95. (Trending: ‘American Idol’ Producer Sued For Sexual Assault)
“The atmosphere is more like a pitching machine now, sending one storm after another off the Pacific,” winter storm specialist Tom Niziol said.
“We were telling you at the end of 2023 that as we entered January, we were expecting the storm track to be more favorable for the East Coast, but also the cold air to be present,” Meteorologist Britta Merwin said.
“Well, there you go. Verified forecast. We’re in for a nor’easter this weekend, and this is going to all happen very quickly.”
“The ice storm, though, a lot of confidence is growing on this part of the forecast,” Merwin said.
“We know we’re going to have a sneaky warm layer locked up in this storm and freezing temperatures on the ground. It’s raising red flags across the board.”
Significant icing is expected in the central and southern Appalachians, with Winter Weather Alerts issued.
“A quarter of an inch of ice is nothing to scoff at or joke about,” Merwin added.
“You want to make sure you’re prepared.”
This storm marks the end of a nearly two-year streak without significant snowfall for several cities.
