Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh expressed openness to forming a unity government with the Palestinian Authority, aiming to rebuild the national reference under the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The potential unity government would manage both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

However, Hamas and the Palestinian Authority have been at odds for about 20 years, with Hamas controlling Gaza and the PA retaining power in the West Bank. (Trending: Trump Announces Heartbreaking Melania-Related Health Update)

Haniyeh said, “We are open to all national components to rebuild our national reference under the umbrella of the Palestine Liberation Organization democratically, in addition to agreeing to a national government for the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.”

“Gaza will not see chaos or political vacuum until an agreement is reached on forming a national unity government to manage both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank,” he continued.

Israeli officials are divided on whether to leave Hamas in power in Gaza or to support the PA taking control.

The PA is seen as corrupt and unpopular, and its leader, Mahmoud Abbas, has not held elections since 2007.

While Hamas plans for a postwar future, the death of a senior Hamas leader in Lebanon and potential hardening of its stance could affect negotiations.
