A 72-year-old Florida man, Michael Shapiro, was arrested and charged with threatening to kill Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell and his children in voicemail messages left at the lawmaker’s office.
The threatening messages, filled with expletives, were made from Shapiro’s home and matched his phone records.
“I’m gonna come after you and kill you,” said Shapiro. (Trending: Trump Announces Heartbreaking Melania-Related Health Update)
“I’m gonna kill your children,” Shapiro said in another message.
Swalwell condemned the threats, emphasizing the importance of resolving differences through voting.
Rep. Swalwell wrote in a statement, “There is no place in America for threats of political violence. We must always resolve our differences at the ballot box. While I will continue to protect my family and staff these continued threats will never stop me from representing my constituents.”
“MAGA Republicans have chosen violence over voting and this is what it looks like. But I’m not going away and neither should you,” wrote the lawmaker on X.
Shapiro has been appointed a public defender after being found indigent and has a prior conviction for making threatening communications to another victim.
“The complaint further alleges that Shapiro pleaded guilty in federal court in 2019 for making threatening communications to another victim,” announced the Justice Department in a press release.
