Washington, D.C. saw its highest homicide rate since 1997 in 2023, with 274 confirmed victims, including 19 children and young teenagers.
The city ranked fifth in murder rate among major U.S. cities. Every ward in D.C. experienced homicides, with most seeing significant increases in violent crime.

The Washington Post reported, “significant overall increases in violent crime,” in every ward of the nation’s capital.
Juvenile arrests for robbery, homicide, or assault also increased by 10%.
Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser said, “It’s been a tough year.”
