Chief Justice John Roberts’ 2023 year-end report focused on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the legal profession, discussing its potential effects and challenges.
He emphasized the increasing integration of AI in law, acknowledging its potential to enhance access to information while also highlighting privacy concerns and the risk of dehumanizing the law.
Roberts addressed instances where lawyers using AI made high-profile mistakes and stressed the importance of human judgment in legal determinations. (Trending: Trump Announces Heartbreaking Melania-Related Health Update)
Justice Roberts said the judicial system “will be significantly affected by AI.”
“Legal research may soon be unimaginable without it. AI obviously has great potential to dramatically increase access to key information for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. But just as obviously it risks invading privacy interests and dehumanizing the law,” he continued.
Notably, he avoided commenting on legal controversies related to former President Donald Trump and instead highlighted the technological innovations adopted by courts during the pandemic, such as videoconference hearings.
