Disney’s copyright on Mickey Mouse expired, allowing for the public use of the earliest version of the character.
Two indie horror films featuring Mickey have been announced, despite Disney’s warnings.
One film involves Mickey as a masked killer, while the other is a horror-comedy with a sadistic mouse. (Trending: Donald Trump Breaks His Silence After Major Court Win)
The filmmakers aim to have fun with the concept and are not worried about potential legal issues.
“We just wanted to have fun with it all,” director Jamie Bailey said.
“I mean it’s Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse murdering people. It’s ridiculous. We ran with it and had fun doing it and I think it shows.”
However, Disney will closely monitor any potential infringement on its trademark and copyright.
“We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright, and we will work to safeguard against consumer confusion caused by unauthorized uses of Mickey and our other iconic characters,” Disney stated.
