Former representative Dave Reichert is running for Washington state’s open gubernatorial seat in 2024, seen as the Republican frontrunner.

Despite the state’s Democratic leanings, Reichert’s significant name recognition and moderate profile make the race competitive.

Democrats are concerned about his potential threat, especially after a poll showed a tight race between Reichert and the leading Democrat, Attorney General Bob Ferguson. (Trending: Trump Releases Must-See TV Ad Ahead of 2024)

Reichert said, “When they say ‘we can’t win in Washington state’ — we can. You can if you’re the right candidate at the right time,” he continued.

“Even among the political class, I would say there was some complacency,” said Washington State’s Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad.

“When that happened, my phone just started ringing off the hook,” recalled Reichert.

“The timing was right, the support was there. I felt called to do this, I felt motivated to do this, I felt an obligation,” added the former lawmaker.

Reichert’s focus on tough-on-crime policies and local issues sets him apart, but he faces challenges due to his pro-life stance and potential association with former President Trump.

The campaign is expected to emphasize local politics over national affiliations.

Despite strong Democratic opposition, Reichert remains confident in his chances, highlighting the unusual excitement around his campaign.

“My name ID in King County is near 65 percent, and in Seattle proper it’s about the same,” said Reichert.

“But it’s not just recognizing the name. People feel this connection to me in a personal way because of my experience, especially in the sheriff’s office, but also in Congress,” added the GOP frontrunner.

Reichert aims to end, “years of wandering in the wilderness. The same government for years, and nothing has changed. We’re fed up, and we want change,” said Reichert.

“Some of what the poll showed me is that people have forgotten who Reichert is, and we have to continue to remind them of who he is, what he stands for,” said Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad.

“He is a Republican in Trump’s America,” she added.

Reichert said, “Our message is ‘I don’t care who the president is.’ We’re going to be able to work with anyone.”

“We’ve tried to remember the last time when a Republican had a 2 percent advantage early on in a campaign. I don’t know if that has happened before,” said Reichert.

“It is especially encouraging, and also unusual, which I think highlights the excitement around this campaign,” concluded Reichert.
