The US Supreme Court may have the opportunity to address the refusal of GOP senators, such as Mitch McConnell, to convict former President Donald Trump during his January 6 impeachment trial.
This follows the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision that found Trump engaged in an insurrection, disqualifying him from holding office under the 14th Amendment.
Despite McConnell’s criticism of Trump’s actions, he voted to acquit, arguing that the Senate lacked the power to convict a former officeholder. (Trending: Democrat Targets U.S. Troops With New Gun Control Law)
If the US Supreme Court hears the case and rules against Trump, he could be permanently barred from holding office.
The Supreme Court justices ruled that Trump was, “disqualified from holding the office of president under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said, “American citizens attacked their own government. They used terrorism to try to stop a specific piece of democratic business they did not like.”
“They did this because they had been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth – because he was angry he’d lost an election,” he continued.
“Even after it was clear to any reasonable observer that Vice President (Mike) Pence was in danger, even as the mob carrying Trump banners was beating cops and breaching perimeters, the president sent a further tweet attacking his vice president,” added McConnell.
“But the president did not act swiftly,” said McConnell, about Trump on Jan. 6.
“Instead, according to public reports, he watched television happily as the chaos unfolded. He kept pressing his scheme to overturn the election,” he continued.
“We have no power to convict and disqualify a former officeholder who is now a private citizen,” said McConnell.
