Ohio Governor Mike DeWine vetoed a bill banning gender-affirming care for minors, proposing an administrative ban on transgender surgeries until 18 instead.
He aims to regulate and track gender-affirming treatments.
Despite having enough Republican support to override his veto, DeWine seeks a hybrid approach to gain legislative backing. (Trending: Ex-Marine Imprisoned In Russia Sends Message To Biden)
He believes such healthcare decisions are best left to parents. The vetoed bill also targeted transgender athletes’ participation in sports.
DeWine’s decision aligns with his pro-life stance and opposition to government interference in personal decisions.
“Ultimately, these tough, tough decisions should not be made by the government. They should not be made by the state of Ohio,” said Gov. DeWine.
“They should be made by the people who love these kids the most, and that’s the parents. The parents who have raised that child, the parents who have seen that child go through agony, the parents who worry about that child every single day of their life,” he continued.
“On the abortion issue, I believe that’s a question of life and protecting human life,” explained DeWine.
“I believe, ultimately, my decision here was ultimately made about protecting life, and that is the lives of these children,” added the lawmaker.
The bill faced opposition from various groups and professionals, who deemed it cruel and unscientific.
DeWine plans to restrict surgeries to adults, establish data tracking, and prevent unregulated clinics.
The bill’s impact on children with gender dysphoria was a key concern.
The bill also addressed transgender athletes in sports, an issue facing multiple states.
“While there are rare times in the law in other circumstances where the state overrules the medical decisions made by the parents, I can think of no examples where this is done where it is not only against the decision of the parent, but also against the medical judgment of the treating physician and against the judgment of the treating team of medical experts,” concluded the Ohio governor.
