Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows explains her decision to disqualify Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot in Maine, citing a multi-month effort to delegitimize the 2020 election and Trump’s role in the events of January 6th, 2021.
Bellows emphasizes that the evidence demonstrates Trump’s awareness and support of the attack on the Capitol, considering it an unprecedented and tragic assault on the rule of law.

“My decision is 36 pages. I encourage people to read it, on the Maine Secretary of State website,” said Bellows.
“The weight of the evidence, all of the evidence, made clear that Mr. Trump was aware of the tinder laid by a multi-month effort to delegitimize a democratic election – the election of 2020 – and then choose to light a match on January 6th,” she continued.
“And then did nothing for a time. The evidence presented — demonstrated — and remember, the events of January 6th, 2021, and this was borne out by the evidence, they were unprecedented and tragic. They were an attack not only on the Capitol and government officials there, members of Congress, former Vice President, but also an attack on the rule of law,” explained Bellows.
“And the evidence demonstrated that it occurred at the behest of and with the knowledge and support of the outgoing president,” she concluded.
