Gunmen attacked remote villages in north-central Nigeria’s Plateau state, resulting in at least 140 deaths over two days.

The assailants targeted 17 communities, burning down numerous houses.

The attacks have been attributed to the ongoing farmer-herder crisis in Nigeria, with blame falling on herders from the Fulani tribe. (Trending: Democrat Found Guilty In Corruption Trial)

Security agencies’ delayed response has raised concerns, and the Nigerian army has initiated clearance operations to find the suspects.

President Bola Tinubu’s government has faced criticism for its perceived inaction in addressing the security challenges.

Plateau Gov. Caleb Mutfwang said, “As I am talking to you, in Mangu local government alone, we buried 15 people.”

“As of this morning, in Bokkos, we are counting not less than 100 corpses. I am yet to take stock of (the deaths in) Barkin Ladi,” he continued.

“It has been a very terrifying Christmas for us here in Plateau,” added Mutfwang.

Sunday Dawum, a youth leader in Bokkos, said, “I called security but they never came. The ambush started 6 in the evening but security reached our place by 7 in the morning.”

Abdullsalam Abubakar, Commander of the Army’s Special Intervention Operation said, “We will not rest until we bring all those culpable for these dastardly acts to book.”

Amnesty International Nigeria director Isa Sanusi said, “Sometimes they claim to make arrests but there is no proof they have done so … The brazen failure of the authorities to protect the people of Nigeria is gradually becoming the ‘norm.'”

Amnesty International has highlighted the authorities’ failure to protect the people and ensure justice in the conflict-hit northern region.
