Powerful storms in the Pacific Ocean are causing towering waves along the California coast, leading to flooding and posing risks to people and structures.
The National Weather Service warns of exceptional high-surf and coastal flooding not seen in years.

Waves as high as 40 feet are expected, leading to injuries and dangerous conditions.
The storms also bring rain and wind, with gusts up to 50 mph.
The Los Angeles Weather Service reported, “Overall, this is expected to be an exceptional high-surf and coastal flooding event that has not occurred in many years.”
“Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore,” cautioned the National Weather Service.
Miguel Blanco said, “The waves looked absolutely massive and it was everything that we expected.”
“It was really big, I’d say 40-60 foot waves,” he added.
“If it’s your turn, you just gotta go,” explained Blanco.
“When you see a big wave, you’re kinda scared but at the same time you’re feeling like you should go and you just go and enjoy the ride,” the surfer continued.
While some embrace the waves, officials caution about the peril they pose.
The massive waves attract surfers to Mavericks Beach, known for its legendary swells.
Despite safety warnings, surfers from around the world flock to tackle the enormous waves.
