A New York Democratic lawmaker introduced a bill, the Rest Stop Restaurant Act, aiming to require food establishments in state rest stops to be open seven days a week.
The bill’s primary target is to shut down nine Chick-fil-A locations in the state, owned by Christian conservatives.
The lawmaker’s motive seems to be rooted in political disagreement rather than public benefit, as the rest stops are privately funded. (Trending: Melania Trump Announces Big Change For 2024)
This move is criticized as an assault on religious freedom and seen as discriminatory towards Jewish and Muslim-owned businesses as well.
According to the Rest Stop Restaurant Act, “publicly owned service areas should use their space to maximally benefit the public. Allowing for retail space to go unused one seventh of the week or more is a disservice and unnecessary inconvenience to travelers who rely on these service areas.”
Pete Buttigieg said, “To me there’s two things that can happen when you are conscious of your identity. One is it turns into all these ways we separate ourselves from each other, and it just turns into one big, you don’t know me. But the other way we can do it is we can say, OK I’ve got this experience, you’ve got this experience, what can we talk about that brings us together??”
“I do not approve of their politics, but I kind of approve of their chicken,” he continued.
The bill is viewed as a form of bigotry and contradicts the progressive tradition, especially considering President Biden’s support for religious freedom.
