Pregnant foreign nationals in Mexico are aiming to cross the US-Mexico border to secure birthright American citizenship for their children, as reported by the Associated Press.
This practice, known as “birth tourism,” allows the children, often referred to as “anchor babies,” to sponsor their parents and relatives for green cards in the future.
The US has around 5.8 million anchor babies, and while the Supreme Court has not explicitly ruled on this issue, there is ongoing debate among legal scholars about whether the 14th Amendment mandates birthright citizenship for the American-born children of illegal immigrants. David Peña said, “The goal is to cross over so the baby will be born there.”

The US and Canada are among the few developed nations with a birthright citizenship policy, while others reserve it for children born to at least one citizen parent.
