A new Los Angeles-based station, Channel 1, is set to launch AI-generated news anchors to provide personalized broadcasts.
The virtual reporters are showcased in a demo episode, featuring lifelike avatars and a mix of real and generated clips.
This move has raised concerns among journalists about potential consequences for the news industry. (Trending: Could Taylor Swift Save Biden In 2024?)
The implementation of AI-generated news anchors has sparked fears of “fake news” proliferation and algorithmic content generation.
Kristen Ruby, CEO of Ruby Media Group, wrote, “If you believe in the concept of ‘fake news,’ you have seen nothing. At least your news is presented by humans.”
“The average person watches 25 minutes of news a night on cable, so that might be 9 or 10 stories,” said Mohammed Mosam.
“If we can generate 500 stories and choose the right 9 or 10 for you, then we’re going to do a better job of informing you, showing you what you’re looking for in your allotted time,” he continued.
“We do have people in the loop. They just end up being more efficient,” added Mosam.
Channel 1 aims to use AI to curate stories for individual viewers, adapting over time to their preferences.
The station has committed to transparency, with an icon indicating instances of AI modification on screen.
The goal is to replace anchors who read from teleprompters, not the journalists involved in researching and writing stories.
This development comes amid a wave of AI innovation and significant job cuts in the news industry.
