Migrant encounters at the southern border of the United States have reached record levels, overwhelming American law enforcement and leading to a humanitarian crisis.

Thousands of migrants from various regions are arriving daily, driven by violence, desperation, and poverty.

The surge is straining resources and prompting discussions between US and Mexican officials.

Scott Carmon, a Border Patrol watch commander, said, “We are not equipped to deal with this.”

“It’s a humanitarian disaster,” he continued.

Adam Isacson, a migration expert at the Washington Office on Latin America, said, “In terms of migrants per day, December 2023 is bigger than any average we have ever seen.”

“Every official who is commenting on it, on all levels, says they’re near or past the breaking point,” he added.

“If you move to a place that’s super remote, there won’t be a lot of agents on staff, and that increases your chances of being released into the U.S.,” explained Isacson.

“There is nowhere to put people. They can’t hold you,” said the migration expert.

Izzeddin, a 32-year-old migrant from Sudan, said, “We came here because we need protection.”

“We saw people being killed, raped,” said Izzeddin.

Izzeddin said he was waiting for, “Border Patrol to come pick us up and give us protection.”

The recent migration swell is attributed to various factors, including cartel conflicts, rumors about legal pathways, and smugglers guiding people to remote border areas.

Migrants seeking asylum face lengthy processing times, and border officials are calling for more resources to address the situation.
