Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a motion in the Washington, D.C., prosecution of Donald Trump, aiming to prevent Trump from introducing irrelevant and politically charged evidence during his trial.
Smith seeks to ensure that Trump cannot politicize the trial and create a circus-like atmosphere.
The motion outlines specific types of evidence that Smith wants to be excluded and emphasizes the importance of adhering to factual, rather than politically motivated, arguments. (Trending: Democrat Targets U.S. Troops With New Gun Control Law)
Trump’s team ought be kept from “raising irrelevant political issues or arguments in front of the jury,” Smith’s motion read.
“In addition to being wrong, these allegations are irrelevant to the jury’s determination of the defendant’s guilt or innocence, would be prejudicial if presented to the jury, and must be excluded.”
Smith’s motion states that “the defendant has indicated that he intends to introduce evidence of foreign influence in the 2020 presidential election to show that (1) he was personally tricked by foreign disinformation, and/or (2) the January 6 riot resulted from ‘efforts by foreign actors to influence public opinion.’ ”
“Such evidence,” Smith said, “should be excluded as an irrelevant and confusing sideshow.”
Additionally, the motion reflects Smith’s determination to expedite the trial and maintain control over the proceedings, highlighting the larger significance of the case for the rule of law in the United States.
