The movie “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” had a disappointing box office opening, earning just $40 million over the extended holiday weekend.

This adds to a series of underperforming Warner Bros. and DC projects in 2023, including “The Flash,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” and “Blue Beetle.”

Despite the slow start, industry analysts remain hopeful as December releases sometimes gain momentum in the new year. (Trending: Joe Biden Emailed Hunter’s Business Associates 54 Times)

The film currently has mixed reviews, and the superhero genre in general has been facing challenges, with the latest Marvel installment also having a low opening weekend.

“Yet more evidence that the superhero movie industry is foundering comes from this shoddy, scraped-from-the-bottom-of-an-ocean-trench sequel,” an Observer reviewer said.

“This final dive into the undersea world of the DCEU implodes under the pressure likely generated by all the behind-the-scenes tinkering. As last hurrahs go, this one’s lost at sea,” another reviewer said.

Several upcoming DC and Marvel projects have been delayed due to production issues.
