The Federal Trade Commission has sued Grand Canyon University (GCU) for deceptive advertising and illegal telemarketing.
The FTC claims GCU misled students about program duration, marketed itself deceptively as a nonprofit, and illegally contacted prospective students.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for consumers and a prohibition on further violations. (Trending: Trump Releases Must-See Christmas Message)
Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, wrote in a statement, “Grand Canyon deceived students by holding itself out as a non-profit institution and misrepresenting the costs and number of courses required to earn doctoral degrees.”
“We will continue to aggressively pursue those who seek to take advantage of students,” he continued.
This comes after the Department of Education fined GCU for misleading students about program costs, with GCU arguing that the investigations are linked to the denial of its nonprofit status.
