Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent a flight carrying over 180 migrants to New York City, but it was diverted to Philadelphia due to weather.
This move remains part of Abbott’s strategy to transport migrants to “sanctuary” cities.
“Last night—in another inhumane act of treating human beings like political pawns—@GregAbbott_TX attempted to send us an unannounced & uncoordinated chartered plane w/ migrants that was diverted to Philly due to weather but whose passengers were then transported here via bus,” Fabien Levy, deputy mayor for communications, said. Abbott said the sending out of migrants gives “vital relief” to towns on the border, and he will continue to do so “until Biden secures the border.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ office criticized the action as inhumane, as the city has been struggling with a high influx of migrants.
Abbott’s office has bussed over 82,900 migrants to various cities, sparking criticism from mayors and the Biden administration.
The Biden administration has provided funding and support to cities like New York, but the migrant crisis continues to strain resources.
“I’m not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel from the federal government,” Adams said.
In November, over 242,000 migrant encounters at the southern border were recorded, the highest November on record.
