In 2023, despite efforts to control the migrant crisis at the US southern border, a record-setting surge continued into 2024.
The Biden administration implemented various measures, including a program for certain nationalities to fly directly into the US, aiming to provide lawful pathways for migrants.
Although numbers initially dropped, a surge occurred as the administration moved to end the COVID-19 national emergency. (Trending: Judge Announces Historic Ruling In Jeffrey Epstein Case)
This led to political implications and budget discussions, with demands for changes to asylum limits and increased border security.
“Our approach to managing the borders securely and humanely even within our fundamentally broken immigration system is working,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said over the summer.
“Unlawful entries between ports of entry along the southwest border have consistently decreased by more than half compared to the peak before the end of Title 42.”
The administration faced pressure from Democratic mayors for additional funding and actions.
As 2023 ended, another surge at the border broke multiple records, making it a challenging year for the administration.
