via PBS

Hanan Elatr, the widow of Jamal Khashoggi, has been granted political asylum in the U.S. after filing an application in 2020.

She expressed relief at the decision, citing concerns for her safety in the Middle East due to her connection to Khashoggi.

Elatr, originally from Egypt, faced threats and had her passport seized by Egyptian authorities. (Trending: Prominent LGBTQ Activist Arrested Over Disturbing Charges)

She has also filed a lawsuit against the NSO group, seeking compensation from the Saudi government and requesting Khashoggi’s devices from Turkey.

The CIA concluded that Khashoggi was killed on the orders of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, but the U.S. has shielded him from legal action.

“I can feel more safe now that I’m not afraid to be handed over to any dictator in the Middle East,” she said.

“Hanan Khashoggi has the clearest case for political asylum imaginable, and I am happy that I could help her get this vital protection,” Rep. Don Beyer said.

President Joe Biden, who initially promised consequences for Khashoggi’s murder, has since shifted his stance, leading to controversy during his interactions with the Saudi leadership.
