Iranian woman Samira Sabzian, forced into marriage as a child and imprisoned for killing her husband, was executed despite international calls for clemency.

Advocacy groups highlighted her as a victim of gender apartheid, child marriage, and domestic violence.

Sabzian had been in prison for a decade, with her case drawing attention to Iran’s high rate of executing women, many of whom were convicted for killing their abusive husbands. (Trending: Assault Weapons Ban Set To Take Effect, Here’s What To Know)

“[T]oday she fell victim to the incompetent and corrupt regime’s killing machine,” said IHRNGO Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam.

“A regime that has sustained itself solely through killing and instilling fear.”

“Ali Khamenei and other leaders of the Islamic Republic must be held accountable for this crime.”

“We again urge Iran to establish a moratorium on all executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty,” the office of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights said.
