The Colorado Supreme Court ruled to disqualify Donald Trump from the state’s GOP presidential primary, citing his alleged role in inciting the January 6th Capitol breach.
The decision is based on the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.
Trump plans to appeal, and he criticized the ruling on his Truth Social account. (Trending: Judge Announces Historic Ruling In Jeffrey Epstein Case)
Legal experts, including George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley, expressed concerns about the precedent set by the opinion.
“BIDEN SHOULD DROP ALL OF THESE FAKE POLITICAL INDICTMENTS AGAINST ME, BOTH CRIMINAL & CIVIL,” Trump posted.
“EVERY CASE I AM FIGHTING IS THE WORK OF THE DOJ & WHITE HOUSE.”
“NO SUCH THING HAS EVER HAPPENED IN OUR COUNTRY BEFORE. BANANA REPUBLIC??? ELECTION INTERFERENCE!!!”
“A SAD DAY IN AMERICA!!!” he said.
“Well, this court just handed partisans on both sides the ultimate tool to try and shortcut elections and it’s very, very dangerous,” Turley said.
“This country is a powder keg, and this court is just throwing matches at it. And I think that it’s a real mistake,” Turley added.
“To call [the January 6 riot] an insurrection for the purposes of disqualification would create a slippery slope for every state in the union.”
“This is a time when we actually need democracy. We need to allow the voters to vote. We need to hear their decision. And the court here just said you’re not going to get that.”
The 4-3 majority vote to bar Trump from the ballot represents a significant legal obstacle in his potential return to the White House.
