Former First Lady Melania Trump recently spoke at a naturalization ceremony, encouraging new citizens to embrace their responsibilities.
However, her husband, former President Donald Trump, made disparaging remarks about immigrants from the same countries just a day later.
Melania shared her own immigration challenges but did not address her husband’s xenophobic comments or his efforts to undermine democratic processes. (Trending: Supreme Court Delivers Historic Ruling on AR-15s)
“Traversing the challenges of the immigration process opened my eyes to the harsh realities people face, including you, who try to become US citizens,” Melania said.
Additionally, she did not acknowledge his refusal to return classified documents, leading to criminal charges.
Despite her public appearance, criticism suggests her speech was merely a publicity moment, and she has been accused of ignoring events welcoming new citizens during her time as First Lady.
The Anti-Defamation League said “insinuating that immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country’ echoes nativist talking points and has the potential to cause real danger and violence.”
“We have seen this kind of toxic rhetoric inspire real-world violence before in places like Pittsburgh and El Paso.”
“He has my support, and we look forward to restoring hope for the future and leading America with love and strength,” Melania later said.
