The Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump is ineligible for reelection due to his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Republicans, including Ronna McDaniel and House Speaker Mike Johnson, condemned the ruling as election interference.
Trump’s primary competitors, like Chris Christie and Nikki Haley, argued that voters, not judges, should decide Trump’s eligibility. (Trending: Judge Announces Historic Ruling In Jeffrey Epstein Case)
Other Republicans, such as Ron DeSantis and Ted Cruz, also criticized the ruling as judicial overreach.
Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel called the court’s decision as “election interference” in a post on X.
Adding that she “looks forward to helping fight for a victory.”
Rep. Elise Stefanik wrote in a statement, “Like the rest of the unprecedented, constant and illegal election interference against President Trump, this will backfire and further strengthen President Trump’s winning campaign to Save America.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed the decision as “nothing but a thinly veiled partisan attack.”
“I do not believe Donald Trump should be prevented from being president of the United States by any court,” declared Christie.
“I think he should be prevented from being president of the United States by the voters of this country,” he continued.
GOP Primary Candidate Nikki Haley said, “We don’t need to have judges making these decisions, we need voters to make these decisions.”
Adding, “We’re going to win this the right way.”
Vivek Ramaswamy, who vowed to remove his name from the Colorado ballot in protest, said, “The Framers of the 14th Amendment would be appalled to see this narrow provision—intended to bar former U.S. officials who switched to the Confederacy from seeking public office—being weaponized by a sitting President and his political allies to prevent a former President from seeking reelection.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on X, “The Left invokes ‘democracy’ to justify its use of power, even if it means abusing judicial power to remove a candidate from the ballot based on spurious legal grounds. SCOTUS should reverse.”
Trump’s campaign plans to appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
