Barbara Balmaseda, a former director of the Miami Young Republicans, was arrested on charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, including obstruction of an official proceeding and various misdemeanors.
Her attorney criticized the arrest as excessive, emphasizing that she is not charged with violence or property destruction.
Balmaseda allegedly traveled to D.C. to protest the 2020 election results and was photographed at the Capitol during the riot. (Trending: Prominent LGBTQ Activist Arrested Over Disturbing Charges)
“Maybe if the FBI spent less time and resources focusing on J6 trespassers with no criminal history, they might be able to make an arrest of the suspect who left pipe bombs at the DNC and RNC offices on Capitol Hill on January 5, 2021, who currently remains at large,” wrote Balmaseda’s attorney, Aubrey Webb.
“We hope, of course, they will rein in the DOJ’s politically-motivated prosecution of January 6 demonstrators,” she continued.
Webb wrote that Balmaseda was “relieved this process will finally move toward a final resolution.”
According to federal prosecutors, Balmaseda entered the U.S. Capitol with other rioters amid broken windows and blarinf alarms.
Balmaseda allegedly went to the Crypt pushing her way to the front of a crowd and through the police line and proceeded into the Crypt, with a large group of rioters.
Balmaseda allegedly moved forward with the rioters through other police lines.
Over 1,230 individuals have been charged in connection with the Capitol breach, with the investigation ongoing.
