Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has pledged to challenge a new Texas law allowing state officials to prosecute migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

This move puts state and local police in charge of border enforcement, leading to friction between the U.S. and Mexico.

López Obrador criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s measures, warning they could backfire due to the significant Mexican and migrant population in the state. (Trending: Bud Light Gets Bad News Ahead of Christmas)

López Obrador said “The foreign ministry is already working on the process to challenge this law.”

Obrador claimed that Gov. Greg Abbott “wants to win popularity with these measures, but he’s not going to win anything, but he’ll lose favor, because in Texas there are so many Mexicans and migrants.”

The law has sparked a conflict between Texas and the federal government over border authority, with Abbott blaming the Biden administration for failing to address illegal migration.

At the bill-signing ceremony, Gov. Abbott saud, “The goal of Senate Bill 4 is to stop the tidal wave of illegal entry into Texas.”

“It creates a criminal offense for illegal entry into Texas from a foreign nation for repeat offenders, that creates the events of illegal reentry with a potential prison sentence term of up to 20 years,” he continued.

Adding, “Biden’s deliberate inaction has left Texas to fend for itself.” he said, adding that the Founding Fathers wrote a clause into the Constitution that gives Texas the right to defend itself.

The legislation, set to take effect in March, has already faced legal challenges from El Paso County and the ACLU.
