A recent Pew Research Center study shows that more Americans are moving away from traditional Christianity and defining “spiritual” in ways that align more with pagan concepts.
While many still believe in broad Christian ideas, such as heaven and hell, a significant portion deviate from Biblical concepts, with a growing number identifying as “Spiritual But Not Religious” (SBNR).
This group is more inclined to locate spirituality within the natural world. (Trending: Supreme Court Delivers Historic Ruling on AR-15s)
83 percent of respondents said that they believe people have a soul or spirit apart from their body.
71 percent said they believe in heaven while 61 percent believe in hell.
The study also confirms a decline in traditional religious faith, possibly due to factors such as church closures and perceptions of religion causing division and intolerance.
Additionally, modern spiritual practices often focus on self-empowerment rather than divine connection, representing a shift away from traditional religious frameworks.
Self-identified Christians made up 63 percent of the American population.
This represents a significant drop from 75 percent from 10 years ago.
