Two New Jersey school districts, Franklin Lakes and Westwood Regional, voted to discard the state’s recommended transgender school policies.
The policies include guidelines for staff to keep a student’s gender identity hidden from parents and allow trans-identifying students to use facilities and participate in activities based on their gender identity.
There is disagreement over the policy, with some arguing that it raises legal issues and infringes on parental rights. (Trending: FBI Bribery Probe Caught Joe Biden’s Brother On Tape)
The Franklin Lakes board is set to vote on the policy again in January, while the Westwood district will have new board members next month.
“What’s important is leaving the window open where a kid could be affected by this if a certain staff member does, for instance, withhold information from a parent. That is more important to me than anything,” Franklin Lakes board member Scott Loia said.
In contrast, Roxbury Public Schools decided to retain the transgender policy, while New Jersey previously sued four school districts over policies requiring parental notification of a child’s new gender identity.
