Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed condolences for the death of a five-year-old migrant child at a city-operated shelter and mentioned that three other migrants, including two children, have been hospitalized due to an unknown illness.

The Chicago Department of Public Health is investigating the cause of the child’s death, and cases of varicella have been detected among recently arrived migrants.

Mayor Johnson is facing criticism for his handling of the migrant crisis, and he has blamed his predecessor and right-wing extremists for the city’s lack of preparedness. (Trending: FBI Bribery Probe Caught Joe Biden’s Brother On Tape)

Mayor Johnson also put the responsibility on “right-wing extremists,” as he told reporters at a press conference, “Everyone knows that the right-wing extremism in this country has targeted democratically run cities, and quite frankly, they have been quite intentional about going after democratically-ran cities that people of color lead.”

“And their whole motivation is to create disruption and chaos,” he added.

“We are saddened at the tragic death of 5-year-old Jean Carlos Martinez, who was living in the temporary shelter at 2241 S. Halsted Street,” wrote Mayor Johnson in a statement.

“Initial reports indicate that the child was suffering from a medical emergency and passed away shortly after arriving to Comer Children’s Hospital,” continued the statement.

The mayor added, “City officials are providing support to the family and are still gathering information on this tragedy. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

According to an NBC 5 Chicago, “the other migrants currently hospitalized are a one-year-old girl, a four-year-old girl, and an 18-year-old woman hospitalized early Monday.”

A spokesperson for the Chicago Department of Public Health said multiple city-operated shelters, besides the Pilsen shelter, reported illnesses.

According to the Chicago Department of Public Health spokesperson, the city has provided infection control guidance to shelter managers responsible for housing thousands of migrants currently under the care of the city.

The ongoing flow of migrants across the southwest border is leading to mass releases into the United States, indicating that the burden of accommodating increased migrant arrivals is likely to continue.
