The U.S. government’s terrorist watchlist has grown to around two million people, nearly doubling in the past six years, including thousands of American citizens.
The list has expanded quietly and is used to target individuals suspected of terrorism, although not everyone on the list is necessarily a terrorist.
The watchlist includes outdated names and may contain deceased individuals due to a lack of resources for regular updates. (Trending: Democrat Excludes White People From Holiday Party In Controversial Email)
“It means there’s something that has led a department or agency to say, ‘This person needs a closer look,’” intelligence community veteran Russ Travers said.
“Those 2 million people who are on the list are on there for a reason,” said Monte Hawkins.
He added that a “vast majority” are not U.S. citizens.
“In a year where the terrorism threat was already elevated, the ongoing war in the Middle East has raised the threat of an attack against Americans in the United States to a whole other level,” FBI Director Chris Wray said.
“On top of the so-called lone actor threat, we cannot and do not discount the possibility that Hamas, or another foreign terrorist organization, may exploit the current conflict to conduct attacks here on our own soil.”
There have been increased attempts by watchlisted individuals to cross the U.S. southern border, and recent warnings from the FBI and Department of Homeland Security highlight elevated terror threats from foreign groups like Hamas.
