Parents of young female athletes expressed concern after a 50-year-old transgender swimmer, Melody Wiseheart, competed in women’s events and shared a locker room with children at the 2023 Trojan Cup in Canada.
Wiseheart participated in events with teenage swimmers and placed second in the women’s 1500m freestyle for athletes 16 years and older.
Parents voiced discomfort over the situation, but Swimming Canada stated that access to changing rooms is determined by facility policies and law. (Trending: Joe Biden Impeachment Formalized As Republicans Unite)
“It’s all so confusing for the kids,” one parent said.
“No one is comfortable. Everybody is accepting of all people, but them swimming against our kids and being in the locker room with them is not appropriate.”
“We must comply with both provincial law and municipal policy aligning with the human rights policies on preventing discrimination. Swim meets are normally conducted in facilities open to the public, and minors routinely share change room space with adults,” Swimming Canada stated.
The organization also addressed concerns about different ages and genders being seeded in the same heat.
Additionally, Swim Ontario confirmed that adults can compete against minors in the “open category” based on entry time, regardless of age.
Wiseheart also competed in a previous swim meet, and the international governing body for the sport had updated its policy in 2022 to restrict male-to-female transgender athletes from competing in women’s events.
