The European Commission has initiated an investigation into a tech company, referred to as “X,” to determine if it violated the Digital Services Act by allowing the dissemination of illegal content related to Hamas’s attacks against Israel.

This marks the first time the EU has taken action under the DSA. X, one of 16 platforms regulated by the DSA, has faced scrutiny for its handling of illegal content and disinformation.

The company’s response included removing posts, suspending accounts, and utilizing a crowd-sourced fact-checking service. (Trending: Obama Reveals His Fear For Joe Ahead Of 2024)

“The higher the risk large platforms pose to our society, the more specific the requirements of the Digital Services Act are,” Executive Vice President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age Margrethe Vestager stated.

“We take any breach of our rules very seriously. And the evidence we currently have is enough to formally open a proceeding against X.”

X CEO Linda Yaccarino said X is committed to “serving the public conversation, especially in critical moments like this, and understands the importance of addressing any illegal content that may be disseminated through the platform.”
