Democratic Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs announced that she would deploy the National Guard to the state’s border with Mexico due to the federal government’s inaction in managing the border.

This decision follows her request to President Biden to reassign the Arizona National Guard to reopen the Lukeville Port of Entry, which was closed due to a surge in illegal immigration.

Hobbs said that the new troops will “assist the Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies with enforcement activities, including fentanyl interdiction, analytical support, and human trafficking enforcement efforts.”

Hobbs criticized using shipping containers to build a wall at the southern border, in response to a lack of assistance coming from the federal government.

“It’s a political stunt,” she claimed.

“It’s a visual barrier that is not actually providing an effective barrier to entry, and I think a waste of taxpayer dollars,” said Hobbs at the time.

Governor Hobbs criticized the federal government for not providing necessary resources and manpower, emphasizing the need for a secure and orderly border.

This move represents a significant shift in her approach to border security, as she previously expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of such measures.

“Yet again, the federal government is refusing to do its job to secure our border and keep our communities safe,” wrote Hobbs in a press release.

“With this Executive Order, I am taking action where the federal government won’t,” she declared.

“But we can’t stand alone, Arizona needs resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing, manage the flow of migrants, and maintain a secure, orderly and humane border,” added the Democratic governor.

“Despite continued requests for assistance, the Biden administration has refused to deliver desperately needed resources to Arizona’s border,” she concluded.

Hobbs began her order by revealing, “For far too long, Arizona has borne the burden of federal inaction in managing the State’s southern border.”

During a trip to the southern border, Hobbs echoed this sentiment to reporters saying, “For far too long, Arizona has borne the brunt of federal inaction on our southern border, and I am tired of it.”

“Now is not the time for partisan politics; it is time for action,” she commanded.
