New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is advocating for a ban on AR-15s and other semiautomatic rifles in an upcoming legislative session.

She aims to use a specialized approach to address organized crime by convening a commission of local prosecutors and law enforcement officials.

Grisham’s efforts to implement firearm restrictions have faced legal challenges, including a temporary injunction against her ban on concealed and open carry, which was later amended to apply only to certain areas. (Trending: Joe Biden Impeachment Formalized As Republicans Unite)

According to The Sante Fe Reporter, Grisham said “Let’s try that vehicle in our own assault weapons ban in New Mexico.”

“Because one thing I have that the senator doesn’t have is I’ve got a set of lawmakers that are more likely than not to have a fair debate about guns, gun violence, weapons of war, and keeping New Mexicans safe,” she continued.
