Amid concerns for safety after deadly attacks by Islamic extremists, French teachers at a Paris-area school walked out following complaints from Muslim students about a 17th century nude painting shown in class, leading to accusations of “Islamophobia.”
The controversial painting depicted a Greek mythology scene from Roman poet Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The hunter Actaeon arrives where the goddess Diana and her nymphs are bathing in the nude.
The Education Minister visited the school to address the tension. (Trending: Dr. Fauci Says the Unthinkable About Going To Church)
Sophie Venetitay, a representative from the Snes-FSU teachers union said, “Some students averted their gaze, felt offended, said they were shocked.”
Adding that “some also alleged the teacher made racist comments.”
A parent reportedly threatened to file a complaint, claiming his son was prevented from participating in classroom conversation about the painting.
According to France 24, “teachers warned they would stay out of their classrooms this week, describing a ‘palpable discomfort,’ and citing ‘an increase in cases of violence,'” in a letter to administrators.
Recently, six teenagers were convicted in Paris for the beheading of French teacher Samuel Paty, who had shown cartoons of Islam’s Prophet Mohammed during a conversation on free speech and secularism.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges related to extremism and freedom of expression in French schools.
