During Vice President Harris’ holiday party speech, a Democrat state representative interrupted, urging a cease-fire in the Middle East.
The representative from Delaware, Madinah Wilson-Anton, called for a cease-fire in Bethlehem, leading to a confrontation with the vice president.
This incident reflects a broader disagreement within the Democratic Party and the Biden administration regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, with some members, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and progressive representatives Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, publicly advocating for a cease-fire despite opposition from others, including President Biden. “Madam Vice President, I am a rep from Delaware. Did you know in Bethlehem they are not celebrating Christmas?” Wilson-Anton yelled.
“Did you know in Bethlehem, baby Jesus is under rubble? Why won’t you call for a cease-fire?”
“I appreciate you wanting to be heard, but right now I’m speaking,” Harris said.
“Call for a cease-fire now,” Wilson-Anton shot back.
“As long as Hamas clings to its ideology of destruction, a cease-fire is not peace. To Hamas’ members, every cease-fire is time they exploit to rebuild their stockpile of rockets, reposition fighters and restart the killing by attacking innocents again,” Biden wrote in November.
“The Biden [administration] can no longer reconcile their professed concern for Palestinians and human rights while also single-handedly vetoing the UN’s call for ceasefire and sidestepping the entire US Congress to unconditionally back the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
