Pro-Palestinian protesters, including members of “Queers for Palestine,” blocked the Manhattan Bridge in New York City, calling for a “Free Palestine” and comparing Israel’s military and the NYPD to the Ku Klux Klan.
This has raised concerns, given that homosexuality is punished in the Gaza Strip and parts of the West Bank run by the Palestinian Authority.

“It’s hard to be gay because I don’t feel free in Gaza,” said a man that escaped Gaza in 2019.
“There are many people gay in the Gaza Strip, and they are in Hamas also,” he explained.
“If you are gay, you should be hiding,” he advised.
“It’s so hard. I was so scared. Scared from everything, you know? Scared of getting hit, of getting kidnapped. I was so afraid. I was afraid Hamas would find out I was gay,” recalled the refugee.
