LeBron James faced criticism after footage showed him sitting with his hat on during the national anthem at his son’s USC debut.
This reignited past controversial statements, including his comments about WNBA player Brittney Griner’s release from a Russian prison, where he suggested he would understand if she didn’t want to return to the US.
Griner had been detained for a narcotics-related arrest and was exchanged for a Russian arms dealer in a deal criticized for prioritizing her over a detained Marine Corps veteran. (Trending: LeBron James Shares Gun Advice For Americans)

James later clarified his comments, emphasizing emotional support for Griner and calling for her return.
“My comments on ‘The Shop’ regarding Brittney Griner wasn’t knocking our beautiful country,” James said.
“I was simply saying how she’s probably feeling emotionally along with so many other emotions, thoughts, etc. inside that cage she’s been in for over 100+ days! Long story short #BringHerHome.”
