The Texas Supreme Court ruling preventing a woman with a life-threatening pregnancy from getting an abortion has sparked controversy.
Republican leaders such as Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Ted Cruz avoided commenting on the ruling, while Sen. Susan Collins criticized it.
The lawsuit follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, enabling states like Texas to impose strict abortion restrictions. (Trending: Dr. Fauci Says the Unthinkable About Going To Church)
“I’m a federal official so I really don’t have a comment,” said Sen. John Cornyn.
“It’s state law, it’s really not my role,” added the senator.
Maine’s Republican Sen. Susan Collins called the Texas Supreme Court ruling “a terrible decision”.
“It’s just inconceivable to me,” Collins added.
.
“I have not looked into that, but I do believe in the life of the mother. I’ve made that exception previously,” contributed Sen. Joni Ernst.
Texas Rep. Roger Williams said, “I don’t really know, candidly, what I think of it right now.”
“I go back to being pro-life with the only exception being the death of the mother,” Williams explained.
The issue is expected to play a significant role in the 2024 election, with concerns that Republicans may seek to implement similar abortion laws nationwide.
Sen. Steve Daines stated that potential GOP candidates should clearly communicate that they “do not support a federal ban on all abortions” and the Republican Party “must have exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren warned, “This is the next step in the Republican agenda on abortion.”
“If the Republicans can get control nationally, they can push those laws all across the country. The woman in Texas was able to go to another state to get an abortion,” she continued.
Adding, “If the Republicans have their way, only people who can afford to leave the country will have an option to get the medical care they need.”
The debate also involves discussions about exceptions for cases involving the life of the mother, and it has become a focal point in political discourse.
