Rep. Kevin McCarthy expressed his support for former President Donald Trump’s re-election bid and indicated he would accept a cabinet position if offered.
In an interview with CBS, McCarthy confidently endorsed Trump, predicting his victory in the Republican nomination and a potential rematch against President Joe Biden.
Despite being ousted as speaker of the House and announcing his retirement from Congress, McCarthy remains open to serving in a second Trump administration, emphasizing their working relationship and potential future collaboration. “And if Biden stays as the nominee for the Democrats, I believe Donald Trump will win,” McCarthy said.
“I believe Republicans will gain more seats in the House, and the Republicans will win the Senate.”
“Can [Trump] count on your support?” CBS News’ Robert Costa asked.
“Yes,” answered McCarthy.
“That’s an endorsement?” Costa asked.
“I will support President Trump,” McCarthy confirmed.
“I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started,” wrote McCarthy earlier in the week.
“If I’m the best person, yes. Look, I worked with President Trump on a lot of policies,” he continued.
“We worked together to win the majority, but we also have a relationship where we’re very honest with one another,” McCarthy added.
This comes after Trump previously supported McCarthy’s bid for the speaker’s gavel, and McCarthy’s subsequent ousting, which Trump did not openly encourage.
“Why is it that Republicans are always fighting among themselves, why aren’t they fighting the Radical Left Democrats who are destroying our country?” Trump asked.
