California retailers without gender-neutral sections for toys will face fines under Gov. Gavin Newsom’s pro-LGBTQ bill, Assembly Bill No. 1084.
The law, effective from January 1, 2024, mandates stores selling childcare items or toys for children aged 12 and under to have a gender-neutral section or face fines of up to $500.
Retailers with 500 or more employees must comply, and non-compliance can result in penalties. (Trending: Trump Announces Major Promise For 2024)
“We need to stop stigmatizing what’s acceptable for certain genders and just let kids be kids,” Evan Low said.
“My hope is this bill encourages more businesses across California and the U.S. to avoid reinforcing harmful and outdated stereotypes,” Low added.
“The company is committed to making Lego play more inclusive and ensuring that children’s creative ambitions — both now [sic] in the future — are not limited by gender stereotypes,” the announcement read.
The bill, introduced by Low, aims to eliminate gender stereotypes in children’s toys.
While it has received some support, it has faced heavy criticism on social media.
