The American press faces a serious threat as former President Donald Trump openly vows to target and seek retribution against journalists, calling them the “enemy of the people.”
His allies, including Steve Bannon and Kash Patel, have discussed plans to target the press, with Patel affirming their intent.
Trump and his allies have also sued media outlets and made threats to scrutinize and punish the press. (Trending: Joe Biden Admits He’s ‘Not Sure’ About Running If Trump Wasn’t)
“I say up front, openly, and proudly, that when I WIN the Presidency of the United States, they and others of the LameStream Media will be thoroughly scrutinized for their knowingly dishonest and corrupt coverage of people, things, and events,” Trump said.
“Donald Trump and his cabal of snowflake henchmen are telling us what they will do if they get power. The plan apparently includes stomping on the bedrock principles of the First Amendment speech by locking up and punishing journalists for simply doing their jobs,” said Ammar Moussa, a Biden campaign spokesperson.
“The 2020 election and last year’s midterms made clear the American people will not accept these kinds of overt and existential attacks on our democracy.”
Experts have warned that a second Trump term could severely threaten press freedom, potentially leading to legal harassment and anti-press actions.
Press freedom groups and legal experts have condemned these actions, highlighting the danger they pose to the First Amendment.
